B.A., Middlebury College
M.F.A., University of Iowa

Description

Joey specializes in preparation for the ACT, SAT, SSAT, ISEE, TOEFL, MCAT, AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Capstone, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP U.S. History and AP World History, and academic support for biology, physics, chemistry, English, writing and math.

Joey has over a decade of tutoring and teaching experience. Joey holds an M.F.A. in poetry, but he loves to teach math, including ACT math, geometry, algebra, and pre-calculus, as well as physics, biology, and chemistry.

Joey is passionate about accessibility and universal design, believing that incorporating a variety of learning needs and styles into the development and deployment of materials leads to a better education for everyone. This drive has led Joey to work towards expanding accommodations (and our sense of that term) for others.

Central to Joey’s approach to tutoring and life is the value placed on games: word and logic games as much as sport, video, and board games. Although nothing can upend the importance of content mastery, Joey has found that students who grasp the similarities between exams and games excel at navigating the strategies that lead to higher scores—and have more fun doing so! No matter what subject or test is being tutored, Joey emphasizes the usefulness of critical reading skills: that notion that there’s a direct thread between how we understand the plot of a line graph and the lines of a sonnet.

While in graduate school, Joey taught a course on rhetorical analysis, composition, research skills, and public speaking as explored through comic books and graphic memoirs (as well as an introductory course in creative writing.)

Joey has also participated in The College Board’s annual AP Reading, scoring nearly a thousand AP English Language and Composition essays over several days. This experience has convinced Joey of the boundless value of a strong writing ability in the college preparatory process.
